About Bourns Space Science and Engineering Day:
The society of women engineers at UC Riverside is hosting an entertaining hands-on space science community event for Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and the community. Girl Scouts will be able to earn an event patch and work towards a badge. This event is free to all participants and will take place on the North side of the UC Riverside campus. We invite the faculty and staff and UCR, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and students from the surrounding communities to take advantage of this opportunity. Elementary, Middle, and High School aged participants will enjoy a variety of events aimed at space science and engineering.
Fun, hands-on activity centers geared toward children ages 5 and up will teach them about the solar system. As our keynote speakers, Mr. Drew will talk about what it's like to be an astronaut and how he got where he is today. Dr. Heldmann will be speaking about women in science and engineering. Later in the afternoon participants will have a chance to meet astronaut, Mission Specialist Alvin Drew (more on Mr. Drew can be found here) as well as
NASA Planetary Scientist Dr. Jennifer Heldmann (more info on Dr. Heldmann can be found here) at one of our scheduled meet and greet sessions. Activities will allow them to explore robotics, create their own unique star constellations in the planetarium, interact with the Mars rover, and much more. The Riverside Astronomical Society will have telescopes set up, give talks and offer hands-on activities. Participants will have the opportunity to meet real engineers from NASA JPL
This event is made possible through co-sponsors including the Bourns Co., NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Xerox, the Riverside Astronomical Society, UCR's Bourns College of Engineering, the Society of Women Engineers, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Note for Parents:
