Welcome!

The ultimate goal of the UCR Bacterial Adhesion Research Laboratory is to optimize effective water treatment and distribution, wastewater reclamation, and to understand mechanisms controlling microbial transport in aquatic environments.

Dr. Walker and her students are investigating the factors controlling bacterial adhesion and transport as it pertains to water quality.  Specifically, the fundamental mechanisms involved in cellular adhesion, and the interactions occurring at the molecular scale between bacterial and mineral surfaces in groundwater are being explored. Additionally the adhesion of bacteria to surfaces in marine environments is actively being studied.  These mechanisms also apply to bacteria interacting with other surfaces including membranes, filter media, and biomedical materials.

In the News:  Dr. Walker has received a NSF Undergraduate Research and Mentoring grant entitled "MY BEST @ UCR, Mentoring Year-round in Biological Engineering, Science and Technology".  This grant will fund UCR and RCC undergraduate student research starting in the summer of 2008.  Read more about the program here or in this Press Enterprise article.  Information on how to apply can be found at: http://www.engr.ucr.edu/mybest/

Dr. Walker has received a USDA grant to fund a project entitled "Building Bridges Across Riverside through Water Quality Research" in collaboration with Riverside Community College.  More information is available on the project website.  This project was recently in the news.  For the articles please click on this link

Dr. Walker has received a USDA grant to fund a project in collaboration with the USDA Salinity Lab and the University of Utah.  For more information click here.

Dr. Walker was interviewed by Jim Ness of Inland News Radio (http://www.inlandnewstoday.com/) regarding the water quality challenges facing New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina (8/31/05).  The full interview can be heard here and the abridged portion aired on KVCR 91.9 can be heard here (please note the report is ~1 minute into the segment).

Women in Science and Engineering: The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) chapter at UCR hosts Girl Scouts as part of Space Science and Engineering Day.  SWE-UCR also hosts Scouts with programs such as Minds for Design.  This upcoming fall SWE-UCR will host "Wow!  That's Engineering?!" (11/10/07).  For more information about SWE at UCR please visit http://www.engr.ucr.edu/~swe/
