Admission Requirements

Domestic and permanent resident students! The application fee will be paid by the Bourns College of Engineering for U.S. citizens or permanent residents for the 2008-2009 admissions year.

Unfortunately, we cannot pay this fee for international student applicant. Applications for international students will be considered after the application fee has been paid.

A quick checklist:

  • Resume - must include current contact information
  • Self-statement of research interest and career goal
  • Official Transcript(s) for all undergraduate studies reported on your application
  • Three letters of recommendations, including recommendation cover sheet (to be sent directly to the department by the recommenders)
  • GRE (and TOEFL if applies) scores from ETS
  • Disclaimer form and application fee ($60 for domestic applicants and $75 for international applicants)

Applicants to the graduate program should hold a degree in chemical/ environmental engineering or a related field, a satisfactory overall GPA from their undergraduate studies, three strong letters of recommendation, and high scores on the GRE general test. The weight of evidence from all sources determines admission.

All students admitted are expected to satisfy the prerequisites for graduate courses (check here for details). Under special circumstances, students who have not completed the undergraduate requirements may be conditionally admitted with the promise that deficiencies are corrected within the first year of graduate study. However, courses taken for this purpose do not count towards an advanced degree.

International students, permanent residents, and even U.S. citizens whose native language is not English and who do not have a bachelor's or postgraduate degree from an institution where English is the exclusive language of instruction are required to complete the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 550 for the paper-based test or 213 for the computer-based test.

A master's degree is NOT a prerequisite for the application of the Ph.D. program.

In general, financial support will not be provided for international students whose primary goal is for a Masters degree.

Application Process

Your file will be reviewed by the graduate committee only when all required documents, including the application fee or an approval of the fee waiver from the graduate division, have been received.

For Fall Quarter (beginning in September), the deadline of Admission and Fellowship consideration for both Domestic (US Citizens and US Permanent Residents) and Foreign (International) applicants is January 5. Applications received after this date may still be considered depending on the availability of the remaining resources.

We welcome applications and inquiries concerning admission to our graduate program. Visits to the department are encouraged after the offer of admission because they provide the best opportunity to become acquainted with our faculty, students, and current research. Many questions can be answered by the Graduate Student Affairs Assistant by email at gradcee@engr.ucr.edu or by phone at (951) 827-2859.
