Financial Aid

Fellowships

UCR offers a variety of multi-year fellowship packages which may include stipends up to $16,000, full or partial payment of tuition and fees, and appointment as TA or GSR. An applicant is judged on the basis of the quality of previous academic work, on the evidence of ability to do research and other creative accomplishments, and on promise of becoming a productive scholar. A contribution to the campus goal of achieving a diverse student body may also be a consideration. Fellowship/grant awards are paid from a variety of funding sources, some of which require financial data. Students who accept fellowship and/or grant awards will be required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). FAFSA forms will be available from academic departments and the Graduate Division. In addition, they are available on the US Department of Education web page and may be downloaded and printed for your use. Students who receive fellowships, TA's, GSR's and fellowship/grant awards (full and/or partial) must register for and complete a full program of study and research each quarter, remain in good academic standing and make acceptable progress toward their degree. In most cases, applications for fellowships are considered only once a year. Since GRE scores are a factor of consideration for awards, we urge you to take this exam no later than December. The number of awards is limited. Applications are made through your major department by submitting the application for admission and the required supporting documents (letters of recommendation, transcripts, test scores, etc.) Deadline for consideration of fellowship awards is January 5. However, check with you major department for any earlier established deadline.

Nonresident Tuition Grants

These awards may pay the full or partial cost of nonresident tuition, but do not provide for resident fees which are charged to all students regardless of their residency status. Awards are made by academic departments. Interested students should contact the department to which they are applying.

Teaching Assistant or Graduate Student Researcher

Graduate students may be employed during the academic year on a part-time basis (up to, but not exceeding 50% time) as a Teaching Assistant (TA) or Graduate Student Researcher (GSR). These appointments are awarded by departments. Appointees serving at 25% time or more for the full academic quarter receive the payment of the Graduate Student Health Insurance Plan fee of $574.00/qtr as well as a Partial Fee Remission of $2,873/qtr . An appointment of 45% time or more as a Graduate Student Researcher during the academic year will include payment of the nonresident tuition fee, if appropriate. The estimated 2006-07 stipend for a 50% Teaching Assistantship is $1,734 per month (gross pay) and $1,359 for a 49% appointment as a Graduate Student Researcher. Taxes are withheld on both appointments.

The Graduate Division is committed to preparing all TA's who teach at UCR. Each new TA is required to attend the Teaching Assistant Development Program's orientation in the Fall. Students are also required to attend either a departmental or TADP quarter long training program. Contact your department or TADP for further information. Prospective graduate students should also explore fellowship, scholarship and grant opportunities available outside the university through foundations, agencies, organizations, etc. These opportunities are frequently referred to as "extramural" sources of support. Examples of these sources are the fellowships sponsored by the National Science Foundation or the Ford Foundation. Information on these types of sources should be available in most universities' libraries, as well as other administrative offices at your current institution (the Graduate Division, Career Services Center, Financial Aid Office are some examples).

If you visit our campus, please feel free to stop by the Graduate Division to review the resources we have available on extramural support opportunities. For more information please contact the Graduate Program to which you are applying in order to find out what types of resources might be available.

Office of Financial Aid: Need-Based Aid

The Office of Financial Aid assists students in meeting educational expenses they cannot afford from personal resources. Applicants must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered for any need based loans. FAFSA's are available in December for the following academic year and must be filed annually. In addition to submitting the FAFSA, various supporting materials which the office uses to determine individual financial need may be required. UCR accepts applications on a year-round basis. Students are encouraged to apply early in order to ensure adequate processing time for loan funds to be available by the fee payment deadlines.

Residency Status

All students are classified either as residents or nonresidents of California. Residents pay no tuition, but nonresidents must pay the full quarterly tuition in addition to the other fees regardless of the number of units taken. In many cases, a student can qualify for legal residence by the second year of graduate school. New and returning graduate students are required to complete a Statement of Legal Residence (SLR). UCR students who previously completed a Statement of Legal Residence as an undergraduate must complete a new statement to confirm current residency status. All new graduate students are initially assessed non-resident tuition until the SLR is received by the Office of the Registrar and a current residency determination is complete. Final residency status is determined by the Residency Affairs Officer in the Office of the Registrar. For more information about residence for tuition purposes please see the UCR Office of the Registrar: Statement of Legal Residence.

Foreign students cannot establish California residency and should expect to pay nonresident tuition every quarter in addition to all other assessed fees.
