Albert Cruz accepts NSF awardElectrical Engineering Ph.D. candidate Albert Cruz won the Judges Choice Award for Excellence of Interdisciplinary Research and Outstanding Communication of Science to the General Public in the NSF 2012 Video and Poster Competition for all the active IGERTs (Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeships) in the U.S.

The competition was held online May 22-24, 2012, and included 114 different entries (one per IGERT awardee) from prestigious universities across the United States. The results were announced at the NSF 2012 IGERT P.I. meeting May 30 – June 1, 2012 in Washington, D.C., where Cruz is shown in the photo on the right receiving his award. Each year, NSF holds this competition among all active IGERT awardees.

Cruz, who is an IGERT Fellow working under the mentorship of Distinguished Professor Bir Bhanu, received a certificate from NSF and a $2,000 award from NSF for professional development.

There were a total of 21 Judges Choice Awards from all disciplines, four community awards and one public choice award. Cruz's entry, "Recognizing Human Facial Emotions in Video: A Psychologically Inspired Fusion Model," had 11.4 percent of the total video hits at the NSF site. His entry was in the categories of Behavior Cognition, Computer Science, Information Technology and Engineering.

Examples of entries in this year's competition included photovoltaic textiles (clothes) that powered electronics; a robot with an active tail inspired by lizards to scale slippery surfaces; and a Discovery Channel search for Genghis Khan's tomb.

A total of 50 judges from various U.S. universities evaluated the entries. There were 1,194 judges' queries on presentations and replies, 13,744 video views, and 5,558 poster views from 98 countries.
