After earning his M.S. at the Bourns College of Engineering, Chen joined the inaugural class at UCR's Richard J. Heckmann International Center for Entrepreneurial Management, where he earned his MBA. Since graduating from the Heckmann Center, Chen has served as vice president for strategic planning and product development for Acorn Technology Corporation in Riverside.

In addition to those responsibilities, Chen serves as special assistant to Winston Chung, chairman of Winston Global Energy Holdings, Limited, and Fellow of the Bourns College of Engineering, and has been instrumental in investments in several U.S. companies by Chung.

Chen also played a key part in procuring Chung's donation of $10 million to the Bourns College of Engineering in 2010, which was recognized by the naming of Winston Chung Hall. The gift established two endowed professorships at the college and the Winston Chung Global Energy Center. In 2011, Chung also provided $2.5 million of lithium ion batteries that now supply power to Winston Chung Hall and $600,000 for funding of energy related research.

"Steve Chen exemplifies the best qualities in our alumni: an engaged, global citizen who is having an real impact on our world," said Dean Reza Abbaschian. "In addition to his business acumen and leadership, he is extraordinarily adept at managing the cultural and logistical challenges of developing U.S.-China relationships. We are very proud to see him receive this well-deserved alumni honor."

In collaboration with UCR, Chung's companies, the Bourns College of Engineering and its Center for Environmental Research and Technology, and other partners, Chen is also playing a key role in the development of a solar-powered smart grid test bed that revolves around sustainable "green" energy.
