Victor Rodgers, Anastosios Mourikis, Devin McBrideProfessor and Chair of Bioengineering Victor G. J. Rodgers, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering Anastasios Mourikis, and bioengineering Ph.D. student Devin McBride have been recognized by the Orange County Engineering Council with the organization's 2013 Distinguished Engineering Educator and Outstanding Engineering Student awards.

The awards were presented during the National Engineers' Week Awards Banquet held Friday, February 22, at the Coyote Hills Golf Course in Fullerton, Calif. The event recognizes the best of the best in engineering for Southern California by presenting awards in a broad range of categories for outstanding individual and project achievements.

McBride, who is on track to receive his Ph.D. in June 2013, has won numerous awards and fellowships during his time at the Bourns College of Engineering. The focus of McBride's research is on the further development of the free-solvent osmotic pressure model and applications to reducing cerebral edema and developing related therapies. His research involves the use of computational and mathematical modeling, in vitro and in vivo experiments, and video imaging. His projects include understanding the osmotic pressure of crowded and concentrated protein environments, development of a treatment for severe cerebral edema, and modeling flux and cell swelling. Rodgers is his dissertation advisor.

McBride received 1st Place in the Distinguished Poster Presentation at the 10th Annual UC Systemwide Bioengineering Symposium in 2010. His poster was entitled "Development of in-Silico Methods for Estimating Ion Binding of BSA for Prediction of Non-Idealities in Osmotic Pressure in Concentrated Solutions."

He is also the coauthor of numerous published papers and is named on two patents. McBride is actively engaged in community service through several UCR organizations, including the SACNAS (Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science), where he coordinates volunteers for the annual Science Olympiad Regional Event, which draws more than 1,000 participants from the region.

Victor Rodgers has won numerous awards for his teaching and mentoring, including the Engineers' Council Distinguished Engineering Educator Award in 2010. The award honors individuals who are outstanding in professional qualities and have a top reputation for engineering education and leadership, and have significantly contributed to students' extracurricular activities and/or scientific achievements.

Rodgers was also recognized by UC Riverside with its Upper Division Honors Program Faculty Mentor of the Year Award for 2009-10. He is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Mourkis' research interests include autonomous vehicle navigation, multi-robot systems, distributed estimation in robot networks, simultaneous localization and mapping, and structure from motion. He has served as a visiting independent advisor at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and as a research and teaching assistant at the University of Minnesota. While at the University of Minnesota, he was awarded the University's 2007 Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship, as well as the Computer Science Department's 2005 and 2006 Excellence in Research awards.

Mourikis has also received awards from the Greek National Foundation for Scholarships and from the Bodosaki Foundation for his academic performance during his Engineering Diploma studies. He has served as a reviewer for a number of technical journals and conferences, and is a member of the IEEE, the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, and the Technical Chamber of Greece.
