About Suresh Kumar Ramachandran Nair

Suresh Kumar Suresh Kumar Ramachandran Nair, from Trivandrum, India, was a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Bourns College of Engineering at the University of California, Riverside. He began his graduate studies in 2009 and worked in the Center for Research in Intelligent System under the guidance of Distinguished Professor Bir Bhanu. Mr. Nair was awarded his PhD degree posthumously in 2013.

Prior to coming to UCR, Mr. Nair was the Chair of the Electronics and Communication Engineering Department at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri, Kerala, India. He had also served as a Research Consultant at Gemtech Solutions (later G4matrix Technologies). He completed his master's degree in system science and automation from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1997. He received his bachelor's degree from the College of Engineering, Trivandrum, where he later taught for 12 years.

While serving as a faculty member at College of Engineering, Trivandrum, he headed the Project Network, under which the quality of education was improved phenomenally across five campuses covered under the project. He continued his academic tenure at Amrita University where he founded the Electronics and Communication Department, trained faculty members and laid a strong foundation for teaching as well as evaluation process. He introduced many software tools to the teaching and administrative community in Amrita and designed implemented a teacher evaluation system. The measures that he setup still help in delivering quality education.

Under his guidance, many well-groomed engineers have graduated, who still remember him as a great teacher. He touched the lives of many students at College of Engineering, Trivandrum and Amrita University who still continue to see him as their guru.

He had a passion for learning and teaching. His parting words to one of his colleagues before departing for the U.S. for studies at Amrita were, "I want to get realization through mathematics. I want to get realization while solving a mathematical problem. For me, studies have been my spiritual practice. Solving a complex problem is like deep meditation for me. I have enjoyed it a lot."

He also had a passion for homeopathy and successfully cured many people. He delivered lectures on homeopathy at the Government Homeopathy Hospital in Trivandrum.

His passion for learning brought him to UCR for pursuing doctoral studies. He was highly enthusiastic about mathematics and probability theory. He shared his knowledge and expertise in programming and mathematics with his laboratory colleagues. He had many interest and was curious to understand various aspects of student, university, and American life. He enjoyed every moment of life as shown by his cheerful smile. However, his progress in the journey of learning met with a tragic end following an accident in his apartment swimming pool, which culminated in his untimely death on June 27, 2012.

The Suresh Kumar Memorial Fund is established in loving memory of Suresh Kumar as a perpetual endowment and legacy for the time he spent at UCR. This fund honors his life and provides opportunity for an international graduate student who shares Suresh's passion for research in intelligent computer systems.
