Professor of Computer Science Eamonn Keogh has been chosen by the Graduate Council of the Academic Senate at UC Riverside for the 2012-13 Dissertation Mentor Award. He will be recognized during the BCOE commencement ceremony on Monday, June 17.

This is the third year in a row a BCOE faculty member has been recognized with the award. Professor of Computer Science Rajiv Gupta earned the award in 2012 and Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering Bir Bhanu was recognized in 2011.

The Graduate Council cited Keogh's dedication to student success in a message informing him of its decision: "...students past and present wrote with great enthusiasm in support of your nomination, citing your dedication to each individual student's success. The time you have spent guiding all aspects of your students' careers was appreciated, and is evident in the current endeavors of your students.  This is a well-deserved award."

Keogh's students describe him as brilliant, passionate about his research, and highly dedicated and caring. They cite the extensive, near-daily interactions he has with them as an important aspect of his mentoring. A common sentiment is that "he inspires us to think deeply and conduct thorough experiments." He gives students "lifelong skills to be a better teacher, researcher, and mentor."

His former students have moved on to successful careers in academia and at companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo! Labs. One student summed it up best: "Dr. Keogh is the kind of advisor/mentor that I want to be. I would consider myself successful if I would be half as good a teacher, a researcher, or a mentor, as Dr. Keogh."

Keogh's research specializes in data mining. His research has been funded by NSF and other sources such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2008, he was named a University Scholar.
