Eleven Bourns College of Engineering students from the University of California, Riverside honed their leadership skills at a special invitation-only conference for math-based majors in San Diego early this month. The 11th Annual Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Student Leadership conference provided the students with extensive professional and leadership development opportunities through direct interaction with industry mentors, speakers and sponsoring employers. The BCOE students joined 180 "hand-picked" students majoring in science, engineering, or math who represented 27 universities and community colleges throughout California. The students attended workshops, participated in mock interviews, and met with industry representatives during the multi-day conference. Their participation was supported by generous donations from Southern California Gas and Edison International. MESA California is considered a top national program for developing the next generation of innovating engineers and scientists through the promotion of success in the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, or STEM, for more than 28,000 educationally disadvantaged secondary, community college and four year college students in California.
