Engineer IT Girl – Robotics!

BCOE

This is a resident (overnight) camp.  It will run from July 20 to July 25, 2008.  The girls will be housed in the dorms at UCR.  We will be working with the Bourns School of Engineering at UCR as well as the Society of Women Engineers.  We will work in teams building and programming LEGO Robots.  In addition, we hope to find enough girls interested in learning more beyond the camp experience to develop a team for the annual LEGO Robotics Competition.  A tour and presentation is scheduled for the JPL facilities in Pasadena.

Minds for Design Summer Program is sponsored by Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council and UC Riverside, Bourns College of Engineering. With a goal towards engaging more girls in the areas of science and technology, this two-week summer day camp is designed to introduce 30 girls in sixth through ninth grade to the world of engineering.  Through hands-on activities, field trips to engineering firms, guest speakers, and professional mentoring, the girls have an opportunity to learn first-hand what it would be like to work in the field of engineering.

This is a day camp that runs 8-5 p.m. and will also be held at UCR Bourns College of Engineering.  Our curriculum was developed by Intel Corporation specifically for GSUSA.  We have two fantastic field trips tentatively scheduled:
1)
Disneyland/California Adventure including a behind-the-scenes tour and presentation by Disneyland Staff, highlighting Physics phenomena at the Park
2)
    tour of the Boeing facilities.
Please see the attached flyer and registration form.  We are waiving the teacher recommendation as part of the application process at this time.

"WOW! That's Engineering!" BCOE
The Society of Women Engineers National selected the UCR SWE student section to host their Wow! That's Engineering! outreach event in Fall 2007. The event is designed to bring young girls together with female engineers to learn more about the field of engineering through interactive activities and discussions.  The selection process included a review of 22 applications from 19 professional sections, and 3 student sections across the nation.  Collaborators for the event will include SWE national, and the Orange County Professional Section to plan for the West Coast event.  The other two host sites selected were Atlanta and Minnesota.
