What is Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnology is the science of making, studying, and working with things on a nano-scale—in other words, really, really small. Can you imagine shrinking a robot so small that it travels through your arteries to remove fat cells? Nanoscientists can. In the next 10 years we will have computers that are made up of molecules, microscopic implants that cure diseases, films, fabrics and building materials that restore themselves, plants with computer implants that monitor growth, and air and water that cleans itself. These inventions will change the world and unlock the door to the wonderland of the “nanorevolution.”

Why should you apply?

You will have a chance to work on cool projects related to the new frontiers of nanotechnology and learn how science fiction affects our thinking on this topic. Imagining yourself working in a team as a future “nano doc” and developing future cures for diseases, tour state-of-the-art nano laboratories, and hear talks from professors on nanotechnology. You will learn about nanoelectronics and how memory metals, nanorobots and nanocomputers will change your future. There will be workshops on how to get money for college and ways to make studying easier. You will receive information about newly emerging fields in technology and future choices in the job market. It is highly possible that you will have a job one day that isn’t even invented yet!

Cool Stuff Students Do:

  • Receive giveaways and project materials relating to nanotechnology
  • Work in teams to create innovative projects
  • Learn about college admission requirements
  • Learn about careers in engineering and technology
  • Interact with undergraduate and graduate students in science and engineering
  • Tour state-of-the-art laboratories
  • Be able to apply to work with a professor during the summer

What is the Cost?

There is no cost for the program, however, you need to bring money to eat lunch on campus each day. Room & Board is available for $42 per day for high school students only. Contact Monica Sepulveda (951) 827-6500 to receive a summer housing application.

How to Apply:

Download and fill out the Student Application , and mail it to Linda O’Neill, University of California, Riverside, Bourns College of Engineering, Riverside, CA 92521, or email it as an attachment to linda@engr.ucr.edu by MAY 7th, along with your Teacher’s Recommendation (Online Form). Selection will be based upon your teacher’s recommendation, your grades, your interest in math and science, and your desire to participate as reflected in your essay.
