Making Solar Energy Economical

sc-rise opening celebrationMaking solar energy economical was identified as the top Grand Challenge for Engineering in a 2008 survey by the National Academy of Engineering. The University of California, Riverside, is leading a major effort to develop new solar technologies and improved applications, and we invite you to join us.

The College of Engineering-Center for Environmental Research and Technology, (CE-CERT) is leading this new initiative to advance solar energy technologies, train professionals for the industry, nurture new businesses, and assist commercial and residential energy users in identifying appropriate applications for solar. The mission of SC-RISE is to help develop affordable, clean, and sustainable energy solutions for California, the nation, and the world.

The Southern California Research Initiative for Solar Energy is a partnership of industry members, government agencies, public and private utilities, trade organizations, and academic institutions. In a collaborative environment based at UCR’s Bourns College of Engineering-Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) and led by its Director Matt Barth, the Center will develop materials for solar energy, solar energy systems, new photovoltaic devices, and solar-thermal technologies. Also, the Center will serve as an “honest broker” to provide reliable and unbiased information and advice on getting energy from the sun.

This effort will fill a need for a reliable resource that can help government agencies, utility companies, end-users, and the technology community make the right decisions about solar energy.
