Major Changes into and within the College of Engineering

Students who wish to change their major into or within the College of Engineering should follow these steps.

1. Submit a major change petition, available in the Student Affairs Lobby outside Bourns A159, to an academic advisor, based on the first letter of your last name.

2. The academic advisor will review the petition for satisfactory completion of the prerequisite courses.

Bioengineering: Satisfactory completion of BIOL 5A/5LA, CHEM 1A, MATH 9A.
Business Informatics: Satisfactory completion of BUS 20, CS 10, CS 12, MATH 9A.
Chemical Engineering: Satisfactory completion of CHEM 1A, MATH 9A, PHYS 40A.
Computer Engineering: Satisfactory completion of CS 10, CS 12, MATH 9A, PHYS 40A.
Computer Science: Satisfactory completion of CS 10, CS 12, MATH 9A.
Electrical Engineering: Satisfactory completion of MATH 9A, MATH 9B, MATH 9C, PHYS 40A.
Environmental Engineering: Satisfactory completion of CHEM 1A, MATH 9A, PHYS 40A.
Materials Science: Satisfactory completion of CHEM 1A, MATH 9A & PHYS 40A.
Mechanical Engineering: Satisfactory completion of MATH 9A, MATH 9B, MATH 9C, PHYS 40A, PHYS 40B.

Satisfactory completion of the prerequisite courses is interpreted as an average GPA of 2.5 or higher in the above listed courses (2.7 for CS and Business Informatics), with no grade below C-. A 2.0 GPA in all other courses required for the major, with no grade below C-, is also required.

3. If the GPA in the prerequisite courses meets the minimum requirement, the advisor will determine whether the new major can be completed within the maximum units.

If the prerequisite courses and total units fall within the approved criteria, and the student is in good standing, the major change will be approved. Major change petitions approved between the first and third weeks of the quarter will be effective for the current quarter. Major change petitions turned in after the end of week 3 will be held for that quarter's grades. If approved, the major change will be effective the following quarter. Notification of the approval will be sent via webmail.

Students who do not meet the minimum criteria in the prerequisite courses, who do not fall within the maximum allowable units, or who are in academic difficulty, will be notified via webmail. The academic advisor reviewing the petition may be able to provide some suggestions about what alternatives are available in these cases.

Non-BCoE Students: BCoE Academic Advisors are available by appointment during weeks 3 – 10 each quarter to advise non-BCoE students interested in changing to a BCoE major. To schedule an appointment visit the BCoE Office of Student Academic Affairs located at Bourns A159C. Please be sure to view the BCoE major change requirements before you meet with an academic advisor.
