Readmission into the College of Engineering

Readmission is the act of restoring active student status after a period of time away from the University. Any time a student's matriculation is broken by withdrawal or lapse of student status (for failure to pay fees, failure to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement, failure to enroll, or failure to graduate), readmission must be pursued to once again become a regular UC student.

  1. Students who left the university in good standing in a declared College of Engineering major will be automatically approved for readmission to that major.
  2. Students who left the university in good standing (but with a different major) and who now seek a major change to a College of Engineering major, along with readmission, will be held to the criteria used for major changes.
  3. Students who left the university in academic difficulty, regardless of their last major, will have their applications reviewed by the Office of Student Academic Affairs and, as appropriate, the Undergraduate Advisor of the selected major. Evidence of improved performance since last attendance, or exceptional circumstances, will be sought. Students readmitting to a different major must also satisfy the major change criteria. If readmission is approved in such circumstances, the student will be monitored on probation for at least one quarter.
            a) A student seeking readmission who left while in academic difficulty must complete at least 20 units (or 5 courses) directly related to
                the major*
with a minimum grade point average of 2.5 (2.7 for Computer Science & Business Informatics).
  4. Students who are readmitting solely to graduate must submit an Application for Graduation with the Application for Readmission.
  5. Students with high units who wish to readmit need to contact an advisor.
            a) Freshmen: over 45 units
            b) Sophomores: over 90 units
            c) Juniors: over 135 units
            d) Seniors: over 180 units

*Courses directly related to the major do not include breadth (Humanities/Social Science) or English courses and only include Biology for specific majors. Courses should be chosen from fields such as Math, Physics, Chemistry, or Engineering. For specific details, consult your advisor.

The Process

  • Applications are due approximately 6 weeks prior to the start of the desired term
  • Obtain an Application for Readmission from the Office of Student Academic Affairs, A159C Bourns Hall
  • Submit the application to an advisor (by caseload) for evaluation
  • Unofficial transcripts for coursework taken since last regular UCR enrollment should be provided to the advisor for use in evaluating eligibility for readmission
  • Once evaluated, an advisor will be in contact about the status

If Approved

  • The application will be returned to the student to be taken to the Cashiers to pay the $60 fee
  • The application will then be turned in to the Office of the Registrar
  • The Registrar's Office will contact the student with registration material
  • If additional transcripts were used in the evaluation, the student must have an official copy forwarded to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 1138 Hinderaker Hall, University of California, Riverside, CA 92521

If Denied
The Office of Student Academic Affairs will notify the student

Notes

  1. UC Riverside Extension's Concurrent Enrollment Program may be utilized to repeat courses as necessary to improve GPA and eligibility.
  2. Students seeking readmission are not eligible to repeat at another school any subjects in which D or F grades were earned at UCR.
  3. Undeclared is not an admission or readmission category for the College of Engineering.
