Winter 2008 Registration Information for Freshmen

Please read this message carefully.
Make sure that you have reviewed its entire contents first.
Contact your assigned academic advisor if you have additional registration questions.

  • In Fall 2007, the Student Affairs office enrolled you in at least one Engineering Learning Communities section of a math or science course.
  • Subsequently, we have enrolled most of you in a math, science, and (in some cases) and Engineering course for Winter 2008.
  • There is no Supplemental Instruction (LNCR 80 workshop) requirement for Winter.
  • Some of you have not been enrolled because you have registration holds from other departments.
  • That means that the hold must cleared prior to us enrolling you in courses.
  • Keeping this in mind, please thoughtfully review the following requests and comments.
1. Go to www.growl.ucr.edu to review your schedule and/or holds.

2. Choose the Winter 2008 quarter
  • For your schedule, select “Classes” on the left.
  • For your holds, select Advising/Enrollment on the left
  • 3. Everyone has a hold that states:
“If you are a member of Engineering First-Year Learning Community, please contact Tara Brown at (951) 827-2577 IF you need to make CHANGES to your schedule.”

The only way to remove the hold is to OPT OUT of the Learning Community.
See the end of this message for an explanation of CHANGES and OPT OUT.

    4. Make sure that you have at least 12 units.
  • If you have 12 units, then it is your choice to add more classes.
  • To add more classes, send me a detailed message with
    • Your full name and student id number
    • A polite request to add class(es), and
    • All of the call numbers (lecture, lab, discussion) for the class(es)
  • You can take up to 18 units
  • Need more than 18 units? Contact your academic advisor.
  • 5. Don’t have a schedule on GROWL?
  • Then you either had a hold or still have a hold.
  • It is from a department other than BCoE.
  • Work with that department to clear the hold.
  • Don’t understand the hold? Contact your academic advisor.
  • Once the hold has cleared, send me a detailed message with
    • your full name,
    • student id number,
    • and a polite request to be enrolled since your hold is now cleared.

    CHANGES
If you need to make CHANGES, then send me a detailed message with
  • your full name, student id number,
  • the reason you need to make the CHANGES,
  • the call numbers for the section you want
  • and your registration appointment time listed on GROWL

  • I will consider all reasonable requests.

To me “CHANGES” only means adding courses.

    If to you “CHANGES” means
  • dropping courses,
  • choosing different sections, or
  • wanting different times,
  • Then pay careful attention to the next point.

Being in the Learning Community means accepting the schedule.
It’s an all or nothing proposition.
Wanting “CHANGES” may mean that you have to “OPT OUT”.

    OPT OUT
OPT OUT means being dropped from the Learning Community sections
  • I will clear the registration hold
  • You will build your own schedule at your appointed registration time
  • ALL holds must be cleared before you can register

  • Notes:
One of the perks of participating in the Learning Community is earlier registration in sections that are not posted in the Schedule of Classes.

If you opt out of the EFLC program and build your own schedule at your appointed registration time, the pickings will be slim and you might end up with worse choices than the ones that I originally provided.

If you opt out, the likelihood is that someone else will have taken your spot.

Continue to check your schedules daily from now through the end of the third week of Winter quarter.
Changes occur often and nothing is solidified until fourth week.
Make sure that you are always enrolled in at least 12 units.
Compare your schedule to the suggested course plan for your major to verify that you are in the correct classes.

Pay your fees by DECEMBER 14th.
Otherwise, you will lose all of your classes, regardless of whether or not you are participating in the Learning Community.

You only need to contact me if you need to make changes to your schedule.
As long as you are in the Learning Community, the hold will remain.
It will not be removed until the fourth week of Winter quarter.

    Final note:

If you fail a course this quarter,
it might mean opting out of the community.
I will consider each one of those on a case by case basis.
You will be notified via e-mail if that is the case.
