Winter 2008 Registration Information for Freshmen

SPRING 2008 REGISTRATION ADVISING GUIDE

Please read this message carefully.

Make sure that you have reviewed its entire contents first.

Contact your assigned academic advisor if you have additional registration questions.

Registration holds and appointment times will be posted on GROWL

February 5th

Registration Appointments

·        Your “appointment” time is not a meeting with your academic advisor.

·        It is just a point in time that marks when you can begin registering.

·        No need to glue yourself to computer awaiting your “appointment” time.

·        Registration is open from your initial “appointment” time to March 12th.

·        Make-up enrollment will begin from March 18-April 11.

·        Please see this link for important deadline dates:  http://www.classes.ucr.edu/enrollment/calendar.htm

Choosing Classes

·        Use the suggested course plan for your major and catalog year.

·        Need a copy?

·        Find it in the Office of Student Academic Affairs lobby in Bourns A159.

·        Or, print your own by selecting “Majors and Courses” from the menu.

http://www.engr.ucr.edu/studentaffairs/

·        Once you know what classes to take…

·        The Schedule of Classes tells you when and where the classes meet.

·        The Spring 2008 schedule will be available online on February 1st.

·        Here’s the link: www.classes.ucr.edu

The instructions above will be slightly altered for students participating in the

Engineering Learning Community.

Learning Community students will receive additional instructions prior to your actual registration time.

At a minimum, the BCoE Office of Student Academic Affairs will register Learning Community students in the Math, Science, and Engineering courses.

Learning Community students then choose any additional classes on their own.

Advising Holds

·        Now is the time to view and clear all advising holds on GROWL.

·        Make plans appropriately.

·        You will need to check GROWL more than once.

·        New holds may appear at any time.

This is especially important if you are a

Chancellor’s Scholar,

Regent’s Scholar,

University Honors Program participant,

student athlete, or

receiving assistance from the Office of Student Special Services

·        Are you one of the students listed above?

·        Then you have priority registration status.  What’s that?

·        Your registration appointment begins on the first days of enrollment.

·        But, if your holds are not cleared you lose the advantage.

·        Want the advantage?  Clear your holds immediately.

·        All holds must be cleared regardless of priority registration status.

The rest of you will probably register during the first two weeks in March.

You have some time, but why wait?

Use it wisely to fulfill your registration requirements and seek assistance if necessary.

Once again, you will not be able to register until you have cleared all of your advising holds.

You can anticipate the possibility of seeing the following holds on GROWL.

These holds are unique to the Bourns College of Engineering.

Your “friend” may have more or less requirements.

If they have less, it’s because you are loved more.

See the specific directions below to determine how to clear the holds.

Not every student will receive each of these holds.

·        Educational Enhancement Series

      All students

·        Faculty Mentoring

Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, & Mechanical Engineering majors ONLY!

Educational Enhancement Series

1.      To clear this hold you will need to attend a workshop listed at this link:

http://www.events.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/display.cgi?key=thismonth&unit=28.

All workshops are sponsored by the Career Center.

You only need to attend one workshop, one time.

·        Feel free to attend as many as you like

·        It is best, but not necessary to RSVP prior to attending.

·        Bring a paper and pen to take notes.

·        Don’t think you will learn anything new?

·        Then, contact tara.brown@ucr.edu to discuss alternatives.

2.  Bring a blank “Attendance Verification Form” to the workshop with you.

·        Have the workshop presenter print and sign their name on the form.

·        Copies can also be found in the Student Affairs Lobby

3.  Deliver the form to Bourns A159C.

Put the form in your academic advisor’s mailbox.

The hold will be cleared by the end of the business day.

4.      Is the office closed?

Then leave the form in the silver Paper Work Drop Off box.

The box is to the left of the door leading to Bourns A159C.

Send your advisor an e-mail indicating that the form is in the drop box.

Include your full name and student id number.

Your hold will be cleared by the end of the business day.

Faculty Mentoring

Faculty Mentoring is a chance for you to interact with faculty.

It is an opportunity to gain greater insight about your classes.

You can also learn how they might relate to your post graduation goals.

Use mentoring to understand what Engineers actually do in the real world.

You should be prepared to ask questions of your mentor.

If you don’t have any of your own, then review the attached file.

The file is titled “Professors are people too

Choose 2-3 questions that you can ask at that the meeting.

See your Webmail account for a detailed message titled “How to Meet your Faculty Mentor”.

The message will outline the faculty mentoring procedure for your major.

If the message does not give explicit directions for your mentor meeting,

then please use the process outlined below.

1.  Send your Faculty Mentor a polite and detailed e-mail to schedule a time to meet.

·        Include your full name, student id number, and a request to schedule an appointment for faculty mentoring (not to clear the hold).

·        They do not understand what you mean by “clear the hold”

·        Do not telephone your Faculty Mentor to set up a meeting time.

2.  Allow your Faculty Mentor at least two (2) business days to return your e-mail.

·        Haven’t got a response within three (3) business days?

·        Contact your academic advisor to discuss alternatives for clearing the hold.

3.                  Your faculty mentor does not clear your registration hold.

·        Obtain a Faculty Mentoring Confirmation slip from Bourns A159.

·        The color of the slip will change each quarter.

·        Yellow is the color of the Faculty Mentoring Confirmation slip for Spring.

4.                  Fill out the slip completely and give it your mentor at the end of the meeting

·        Your Faculty Mentor will sign the confirmation slip verifying your meeting.

·        Bring the signed slip to Bourns A159C.

·        Put the slip in the mailbox of your assigned academic advisor.

·        Your hold will be cleared before the end of the business day.

5.         Is the office closed?

·        Then leave the form in the silver Paper Work Drop Off box.

·        The box is to the left of the door leading to Bourns A159C.

·        Send your advisor a detailed e-mail indicating that the form is in the drop box.

·        Your hold will be cleared by the end of the next business day.
