Accounts


Am I eligible for a computer account?

Computer accounts are available to the following groups:

* College of Engineering faculty and staff
* Graduate students enrolled in the Bio, Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical and Environmental Engineering program
* Undergraduates majoring in Bio, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, and Environmental Engineering
* Alumni of the College of Engineering dept. (grads and undergrads)

If you don't qualify, note that computer accounts are available from other departments on campus. Check with your major department or college.

How do I sign up for a computer account?

Obtain an account from the systems group via the website.

How long is my account good for?

All accounts are good until July of the year you graduate.

How do I sign up for card access to Bourns Hall?

Card access is available to the same groups and for the same time periods as those eligible for computer accounts. Please activate your card here.

How long is my card access good for?

Your card access will, in most cases, expire when your computer account expires.

What labs can I use?

Your card access will allow you to get into B207 / B238 Mechanical Engineering Majors or B255 / B230 for Chemical/Environmental Engineering Majors. B265 Bio Engineering Majors. Please note that if a class section is using the lab, students enrolled in that section have priority.

What will my login name and password be?

Your login name will be assigned to you when fill out you account form. It will usually be either your first initial followed by your last name or, in a few cases, just your first name. Your password will be a random selection. Of course, you need to change your password the first time you log in.

What sort of restrictions are there on the use of my account?

When you signed up for your account, there was a lot of fine print at the bottom that you were supposed to read. If you didn't read it, this is basically what it says:

* Don't try to make money using your account.
* Don't modify or break any of our hardware or software.
* Follow the instructions on all of the signs in the lab.
* Don't let other people use your account.
* Your account is University property and may be revoked at any time.

What is a quota?

Your quota is a limit on the amount of system resources that you are allowed to use. A disk quota is a limit on the amount of disk space that you can use in your home directory. A printer quota is a limit on the number of pages that you can print during that quarter.
When you are over printer quota for the quarter you print jobs will be destroyed.
When you are over disk quota you will not be allowed so save files or receive email.

How can I check my disk quota?

First, ssh to gauss. You can then check your quota by typing "quota" at your UNIX prompt.

What happens to my account after I graduate?

* Your account is suspended.
* As a courtesy you will be allowed temporarily use you engr e-mail address but all mail must be forwarded to another address.
* You will receive a permanent e-mail address alias after you have completed the alumni survey.
