To use VPN you must have the "Windows Service Pack 3" or "Windows Vista Service Pack 1" installed. If you are not sure you have it installed or need to install it go here.
1) Go to Start->My Network Places
2) Click on view network connections
3) Click create a new connection
4) A 'New Connection Wizard' should popup.  Click next.
5)  Select "Connect to the network at my workplace" and click next.
6) Select "Virtual Private Network connection" and click next.
7)  Type in a name for this connection and click next.
8) Select "Do not dial the initial connection" and click next.
9) Type in the server: vpn.engr.ucr.edu.  Click next.
10)  Select "Add shortcut to desktop" and click next.
11) Type in your username and password.
NOTE: Your username must be prefixed with "engr\" to specify the domain.
12) You should now see that you are connected.
You have now completed creating a VPN connection, you can now remotely access your H Drive and other files by name (\\toaster\username OR \\toaster.engr.ucr.edu\username). To remotely control your computer using Remote Desktop, please follow the instructions below.
Here is a brief tutorial in setting up a Remote Desktop connection in Windows XP.
1) Access the remote desktop function by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection
2) Once you have the remote desktop connection screen open, enter the FULL name of the computer you wish to connect to. If you are unsure of this you can access the name by going to Start > My Computer + (right click) > properties. (This also must be done from the computer you wish to access remotely)
3) Once you have the system properties window open, select the "Computer Name" tab. The Full computer name should be shown below the computer description. (Copy Paste this name by selecting the text with your mouse and pressing CTRL + C)
4) Paste the computer name into the "Computer" field and press Connect. Once connected enter your login information as you would normally including your username and password.
