Solar Energy

The earth has many sources of energy. From renewable sources like the sun and the wind…to non-renewable ones like coal and oil, the earth provides for our need of energy to warm our homes, power our factories, and keep our cars moving.  Girls will explore the energy provided by the sun. Each girl will construct a vehicle that utilizes a solar panel, motor, and other components to power their alternative energy car.

SWE Lip Gloss

SWE collegiate members from will lead the girls in a fun activity in making lip gloss. The college women will share stories about their lives as college students. Girls will be able to bring their lip gloss home in a special container.

For the parents:

SWE-OC Panel:

Led by the SWE – Orange County professional section, learn about careers in engineering from real practicing women engineers.  This is your chance to learn about what day to day life is for real engineers.

Lab Tours:

Visit a real engineering research lab at UC Riverside.  As time/space permits, you may have opportunities to visit the Bacterial Adhesion Lab, Nanofabrication Cleanroom, or the Environmental Flow modeling Lab.

About Wow :

In this Wow! That’s Engineering! event, SWE creates an experience for girls in the 10th-12th grade where they have the opportunity to meet female engineers and technologists and hear first-hand about these exciting career paths. Women engineers and technologists present interactive activities and the girls experience the creativity and innovation that goes on in the field of engineering.

While the demand for technology-savvy entrants in the workplace is growing three times faster than all other occupations, the percentage of women engineers in the workforce remains at approximately ten percent. In an effort to change the current perspective of engineering and technology fields among girls, the Society of Women Engineers will celebrate Wow! That’s Engineering!, honoring the achievements of women and girls as they develop and discover the future through technology.
