As demanding as the academic program is, studying engineering is also fun.  A wealth of engaging extracurricular activities in the college encourages professional, personal and leadership development. Bourns' organizations all offer social activities, projects and opportunities to participate in regional and national conferences.

BCOE - Leadership Council

The Bourns College of Engineering Leadership Council is made up of officers, usually presidents and vice presidents, from all the BCOE student organizations. The council hosts leadership training and participates in Fall Welcome Week, Engineering Week and the End of the Year Banquet.

Association of Computing Machinery

The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) promotes professional development, leadership and knowledge growth of students in the computer science field.


American Institute of Chemical Engineers

The goal of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AiCHE) is to help students make the transition from college to career. Through field trips to industrial and chemical engineering environments, exam preparation and résumé building sessions, guest speakers, and student/professor gatherings, the organization enriches the college experience for students and staff.


American Society of Mechanical Engineers

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) provides engineering students with hands-on experience solving real world design challenges.

Biomedical Engineering Society

The Biomedical Engineering Society helps to promote the education and diversity�of the next generation of biomedical engineers and enhances the impact of biomedical engineering on society and human health.


Engineers Without Borders

Established at UCR in 2008, the chapter fosters responsible leadership and supports community-driven development programs worldwide through the design and implementation of sustainable engineering projects.


Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers

Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) provides engineers with technical, social and professional development in the engineering field. Activities include career enhancement, engineering social events and promotion of growth in respective professions.


Materials Research Society

The Materials Research Society (MRS) advances technical excellence by providing a framework in which the materials disciplines can convene, collaborate, integrate and advocate.


National Society of Black Engineers

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) works to increase the number of ulturally responsible Black engineers, encouraging them to excel academically, succeed professionally and make a positive impact in the community.


Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) helps create top-caliber engineers by providing resources and research opportunities. Its members are committed to serving the community as active role models and leaders in various high school outreach and university-related events.


Society of Automotive Engineers

The Society of Automotive Engineers chapter at UCR participates in nationwide collegiate design contests sponsored by SAE International to conceive, design, fabricate, and compete vehicles. UCR has participated in the Formula SAE and Mini Baja challenges.


Society of Women Engineers

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) helps members improve leadership, time management, communication and problem solving skills, demonstrates the value of diversity and teamwork, and helps encourage women and girls to study engineering.


Theta Tau Professional Engineering Fraternity

The purpose of Theta Tau is to develop and maintain a high standard of professional interest among its members, and to unite them in a strong bond of fraternal fellowship.
