Research Interests:

The development, design, and analysis of engineered systems to improve and/or protect the quality of the environment has been the focus of my research throughout my career. Over the past 25 years I have conducted various investigations involving land treatment systems for municipal and industrial wastewater; sludge treatment and co-disposal with solid wastes by land spreading and composting, primary effluent filtration, and fed-batch biological treatment of hazardous wastes. While I maintain an on-going interest in the traditional areas of municipal water and wastewater treatment, my more recent efforts have been related to the remediation of contaminated soils to minimize detrimental effects to underlying groundwater.  I have been working on remediation related to heavy metals (particularly lead, cadmium, and arsenic), and more recently perchlorate remediation.  The overall goal has been to develop a systems approach, which can be used for in situ and ex situ soil and groundwater remediation.  Current work at UCR also involves a research project investigating the reliability of reactive barriers in preventing migration of mixed contaminant plumes from hazardous waste sites.
