U.S. News Ranks BCOE's Master of Science in Engineering Online Program as Top 30 Best Online Engineering Program

The University of California, Riverside, Master of Science in Engineering Online Program moved up four spots in the 2022 U.S. News & World Report Best Online Engineering Programs, from No. 34 in 2021 to No. 30 in 2022.

“Our esteemed faculty teaching with top-notch technology offers a world-class education both in-person and online, which competitive students are recognizing from across the nation,” said Christopher S. Lynch, dean of the Marlan and Rosemary Bourns College of Engineering. “As we turn the page on our 30-year history as a college, I look forward to our bright future as we continue to enhance learning offerings that meet the needs of today’s students.”

Since BCOE’s Master of Science in Engineering Online Program (MSOL) launched nearly one decade ago in 2013, enrollment has steadily increased year-by-year. From fall 2020 to fall 2021, enrollment increased by 14 percent – bucking the national trend of a decrease in enrollment in primarily online programs during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“What distinguishes UC Riverside’s online engineering program is the caliber of a University of California education that pairs technical engineering courses with professional development classes,” said Kambiz Vafai, program director of UCR’s Master of Science in Engineering Online Program. “With this specialized training, our graduates have a proven track record of advancing their careers at top companies in industry and the public sector.”

For the 2022 Best Online Engineering Programs, U.S. News ranked schools offering Master’s of Science degrees in engineering using five categories: engagement, faculty credentials and training, expert opinion, services and technologies and student excellence. Subcategories include graduation rate, class size, preparedness to teach distance learners, technological infrastructure, undergraduate GPA, a peer assessment survey, and more.

BCOE currently offers seven specializations in the MSOL program: Bioengineering, Data Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Materials at the Nanoscale, and Mechanical Engineering. The college anticipates adding two new specializations with classes starting in fall 2022: Mobility Engineering and Engineering Management.
